MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Stevens Point lawmaker is reviving a proposal for the sale of a lifetime fishing license for Wisconsin residents.
Patrick Testin introduced the proposal this week in Madison, saying it would be a way to help promote the sport and the outdoors in Wisconsin.
“Republicans and Democrats alike like to get out there and catch that trophy fish. We think that this is a great way to make sure Wisconsin’s sporting heritage remains intact and hopefully generate interest for future anglers in the state,” said Testin.
The price of the lifetime license would be about $570, which is based on the current cost of a one-year license times 30.
Several neighboring states offer a lifetime fishing license including Minnesota and Illinois. A similar proposal was brought forward in the legislature back in 2019 but failed to reach the Governor’s desk. Though it did win the backing of some groups like Trout Unlimited.
Testin has revived the bill with help from State Representative Ron Tusler of Harrison. They’re still circulating the bill for additional sponsors.
