MADISON, WI (WSAU) — State Representative John Spiros is one of the authors of a bill designed to call attention to an increase in carjacking incidents statewide.
According to Spiros carjacking, or violently stealing an occupied vehicle, is currently not defined in state statute. He says doing so would allow for better statistical tracking of the crime.
The proposal would also increase penalties for carjacking with a dangerous weapon, such as a knife or gun, to a class B felony. Spiros says that would require those found guilty of the crime to serve the entire length of their sentence in prison, removing the possibility of extended supervision.
The Department of Justice says carjacking rates have gone up significantly in both Madison and Milwaukee. Spiros calls that “unacceptable.”
The bill has been introduced by Spiros and Representative Jesse James of Eau Claire.
