MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Gov. Evers’ budget will be investing a portion of the state’s budget surplus to improve American Family Field.
The planned investment will allocate a one-time $290 million sum from the projected $7 billion state budget surplus to the baseball park district. This would guarantee that the baseball district could fulfill its current lease commitments and duties to the Brewers. The team intends to use the money to maintain, repair, and enhance the equipment at American Family Field.
According to preliminary estimates, this could save taxpayers $200 million while also generating $400 million in revenue over the next 20 years. The Brewers’ current lease at American Family Field expires in 2030, and this proposal would keep the team in Milwaukee through 2043 with a lease extension.
“I’ve been watching baseball in Milwaukee since the County Stadium days when I had the chance of a lifetime to watch Warren Spahn’s 300th-career game there way back when. As governor, and also someone who also happens to be a lifelong Brewers fan, I’m so excited about the historic opportunity we have today to keep Major League Baseball here in Milwaukee for another twenty years and to usher in a new generation of Brewers fans in Wisconsin who can grow up rooting for the home team just like I did,” Gov. Evers said in a press release.
