WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Wausau school board is responding to community questions after making a major decision on the future of the school district.
The Wausau School Board approved a portion of the plan to restructure the district last night. The plan calls for a single city-wide public high school, with grades 10-12 occupying a senior high at the current Wausau West, grades 8 and 9 attending Wausau East’s junior high, and two 5-7th grade middle schools at John Muir and Horace Mann.
Some members of the community believe that this decision was made too quickly and that the district has not done enough to communicate its plans to the public. “This conversation has been happening for years and with earnest over the last year with dedicated focus and exploration since last June, so I wouldn’t say this was a surprise,” Superintendent Keith Hilts says.

According to spokeswoman Diana White, the public has access to resources that detail the whole process the district has followed over the years. A timeline of all the meetings and sessions that were open to public comment is one of these resources, and it is accessible on the district’s website.

School Superintendent Dr. Keith Hilts says the process will continue to be transparent and there will be future meetings that will include opportunities for further public input.
