WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Wisconsin and 32 other states have finalized a $435 million settlement with JUUL Labs.
The settlement was the result of an investigation aimed at holding JUUL Labs accountable for inappropriate marketing and sales practices.
According to the investigation, JUUL Labs used marketing tactics such as advertisements with young models, social media platforms, and having free samples available at events. JUUL also sold products in flavors that appealed to young people and used packaging that implied lower levels of nicotine than what was actually in the product.
Of the $435 million settlement payments that will be distributed over a six- to ten-year period, Wisconsin will receive just under $15 million. The funds will be used for electronic nicotine delivery system prevention and cessation efforts for people under the age of 24.
