WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Local counties have begun to implement towing bans due to this week’s winter storm.
Marathon County Sheriff Chad Billeb says that means if you put your vehicle in the ditch along a county road or highway, it’s going to stay there for a while.
“We’ll make sure the vehicle is far enough off the road that it’s not a hazard, and then we give that person a ride to their home, a local restaurant, or motel,” said Billeb. “Then we let them know that when the road conditions improve they can come out with a wrecker/operator and have their vehicle removed.”
Billeb says tow bans are needed to keep first responders and other drivers who must be on the roads safe because when conditions are bad and visibility is low it doesn’t take much for one accident to turn into several much like last year’s pileup on US 51 near County Road U. “It’s really difficult when we are out trying to remove a vehicle, and people are coming into those scenes.”
Those who do need to be on the road for work or other reasons should make sure they have a winter survival kit in their car and a charged cell phone.
Other counties implementing tow bans include Portage, Wood, and Waupaca. The bans will remain in place until further notice.
