WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — After a steady diet of temps in the 40s zapped much of the region’s snow, mother nature was kind enough to restock the supply this week.
That’s good news for snowmobilers and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts as nearly all trails in Marathon and Wood Counties will be open by Saturday morning.
Zones four and six in Marathon County will open at 8 AM Saturday, those were the only two sections that didn’t open on Friday. Officials say there will still be some limited closures in Zone four including:
- Intersection 175 to 392 (West of Marathon City)
- Intersection 355 to 357 (Marathon City)
- Intersection 357 to 356 (Near CTH O and HWY 29)
Those areas are marked with “Trail Closed” signs.
Conditions are good with some icy areas, so riders are asked to be cautious near hills and corners and at any creek and water crossings.
In Wood County, all trails opened Friday at 10 AM with some limited closures. Those include:
- Yellow River Riders will be opening trails Saturday at 8 am.
- Vesper Snow Drifters section of trail starting at intersection 8, State Highway 73 south to State
- Highway 54 (ATV intensive use area) remain closed.
In Portage County trails in Zones two through seven will be open as of 6 PM Friday with one closure. That’s in zone two where logging operations have shut down Corridor 15 from Pioneer Rd. To Hwy X.
Zone one trails will open Saturday at 8 AM with some closures- trail 100 from intersection 30 leading into Wood County and Corridor 21 from intersection 21 going South into Wood County.
Lincoln County opened all trails on Friday as well. Though there are two areas that are closed due to recent land transfers:
- Trail 86 from Intersection #25 to the Taylor County Line.
- Corridor 21 from Hwy M north of Homestead Road to the Taylor County Line.
