WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – A new Marathon County initiative seeks to convert waste into natural gas.
Trash decomposition produces gas, notably methane, which in the past has often been burnt off at the Ringle landfill operated by the Marathon County Solid Waste Department to prevent a buildup.
According to Kurt Gibbs, chair of the Marathon County Board, the county will partner with Viridi, one of the leading renewable natural gas (RNG) platforms in the country, to convert the landfill’s methane gas into clean renewable natural gas, equivalent to more than three million gallons of gasoline annually.
Gibbs also spoke about the benefit this partnership will bring to the areas economy saying, “A royalty will be paid to the county for the value that is being generated by the sale of that natural gas and by the sale of the renewable natural gas identifiers.”
Once Viridi has collected the gas, it will be sent to Denmark to be used in a pipeline, or it will be used in a central Wisconsin pipeline if the necessary permits are able to be obtained.
Gibbs says the plan to construct the infrastructure required to clean the gas will start later this year and will go live in 2024.
