STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) – Governor Evers made his first stop of the day on Monday at the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County.
The Governor took a tour of the organization and learned about the various programs it provides to local students, such as the Youthforce program, which teaches automotive skills.
After the tour, Evers took some time to address the staff and community leaders on the value of the club and the necessity of ensuring all needs of students around the state are being met.
When asked about the state budget proposal and whether he thought the current language for the childcare section would pass, Evers said, “I believe so, and I think every Republican and Democrat have a need for childcare. It’s become an economic issue for parents when mom and dad work, they’ve got to have childcare.”
Evers also spoke about the issues facing childcare, such as the cost and the lack of workers in the field, saying, “We have to invest in it, whether it comes from local sources or state sources.” “People don’t work in childcare for free; there is a cost there; the facilities are also a cost; there are all sorts of costs that need to be assumed, and if we want people to work in the childcare industry, we have to pay them a reasonable wage.”
Evers proposed an additional $2.6 billion in public school funding over the next two years, representing a nearly 15% increase in spending. State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos called Evers’ plan a “feeble ploy” to gain voter support, as Republicans continue to call for more funding to expand the state’s private school choice program.
