WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man facing attempted homicide charges will have his trial reset after his attorneys pulled out of the case last month.
Court records show a four-day jury trial scheduled for Richard Mason was canceled this week, and his representatives dropped out of the case in February.
Mason is accused of shooting another man during an argument. Investigators say he approached another man near a home on Emter Street back in January of 2022 and confronted him, then pulled a handgun and shot the man and the abdomen. A witness says Mason then stood over the victim and continued to point the weapon at them before taking off.
The victim was able to go to a nearby home for help. Police later found Mason’s vehicle along Lake View Drive and arrested him without incident. The victim was hospitalized but survived the shooting.
The 29-year-old represented himself during Tuesday’s hearing. As of Wednesday, he did not have an attorney listed.
Mason returns to court on April 7th for a pretrial conference. Further hearings are scheduled for May 15th and 30th as well.
