MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Marquette battled and dominated their way to a 78-61 rout of the Vermont Catamounts on Friday afternoon.
Kam Jones led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 19 points and three 3-pointers. With 14 minutes remaining in the game, Marquette led 48-40 when Jones went on a scoring run, scoring 18 consecutive points to help the Golden Eagles take a commanding 63-46 lead. David Joplin, the Big East’s sixth man of the year, scored 12 points off the bench.
Tyler Kolek, the Big East Player of the Year, finished with only 8 points and 4 assists while shooting 3-11 from the field. Kolek left the game with a thumb injury early in the first half but returned shortly after.
This was Marquette’s first tournament win since 2012-13, after falling to North Carolina in the first round last year, 95-63.
On Sunday, the Golden Eagles will face the Michigan State Spartans, who will be led by former Marquette star and SPASH alum Joey Hauser.
