WESTON, WI (WSAU) – The Parks and Recreation Committee of the Village of Weston met last night to discuss the future of a local community park.
The board discussed the proposed plans and the challenges that would need to be overcome in order to make the Yellowbanks course playable. Among these issues are the removal of trees, the management of wetlands, and the trimming of overgrown bushes and weeds around the basket.
WADGE (Wausau Area Disc Golf Enthusiasts) has been at the forefront of the plan, donating their time and resources over the last two years to make the course a reality.
WADGE member Chris Carlson spoke about the proposed plan and what this means for those heavily invested in the growth of the sport of disc golf saying, “The sport of disc golf is growing, my kids are into disc golf, everyone who comes out to our Friday night leagues bring their kids and it’s really exciting to see where the disc golf community is going and it’s going to be a great thing for Wausau if we can really get Yellowbanks developed over the next 3 to 5 years.”
The Wausau area already has some disc golf courses, such as Memorial Park and Liberty Park, but Carlson says this course will provide players with new challenges “This course is difficult. You’re not going to come out of there with a nine or ten under every time.”
“The course the way it lies right now, hole 5 and 6 you’re playing with water and I played there yesterday and lost two discs into the river and that’s part of the fun of the game,” he continued.
Carlson stated that members of the community, whether new or experienced, are welcome to join WADGE. The league will begin play on April 14th at 5 p.m. at Northcentral Technical College and will play three to four nights per week, primarily on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
