MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Badgers have named former MSU Mankato coach Mike Hastings to lead the men’s hockey program following the departure of Tony Granato.
Hastings has led the Mavericks to eight NCAA Division I tournament appearances and a pair of frozen fours. He’s also won the Spencer Penrose award three times, naming him the top coach in college hockey.
Hastings has spent 25 years in college hockey, including the last 11 with the Mavericks. His teams have never posted a losing record.
His resume also includes stops at the University of Minnesota as an assistant and tenure in Omaha as a coach for the UNO Mavericks and a period as the coach of the Omaha Lancers of the USHL.
“Wisconsin is one of college hockey’s great programs and I am both thrilled and humbled to have this opportunity,” Hastings said in a press release. “I want to thank Chris McIntosh for his belief in me. Badger hockey has a lot going for it – great alums, fans, facilities, tradition, a terrific campus and city. I can’t wait to get to Madison and start working with our team on building a winning culture on and off the ice.”
His coaching resume also includes work for the youth national team at the 2019 World Juniors. He was also an assistant for Team USA at the 2022 Bejing Olympics.
Hastings also played collegiately for St. Cloud State University for two years beginning in 1986 before injuries cut his career short.
