STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The man who investigators say was driving without a valid license when his vehicle crashed, killing one of his passengers, has pled not guilty to the charge.
Axel Crus-Zelaya made the plea in Portage County on Monday, where he’s being held on one count of operating without a valid license, causing a death.
Investigators say he was driving along US Highway 10 near Amherst Junction when he lost control. The vehicle rolled and came to rest on its wheels. The impact of the crash killed one of the three passengers.
Excessive speed and poor road conditions contributed to the incident.
The Class H felony carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison and $10,000 in fines. It’s the second-lowest felony class in Wisconsin statute.
Monday’s hearing also included a proposed bond modification, which was denied. The 30-year-old remains jailed on a $5,000 bond and will return to court for a pretrial conference on May 8th.
