In the midst of all the depravity and deplorable behavior in our world, I came across this remarkable article The von Trapps of Harlem from The Free Press about a family of 12 whose 10 children all play (or are destined to play) a string instrument. As much as I enjoy my 70s and 80s rock, there is indeed something quite calming and soothing about classical music.
The de la Motte family relocated from California to New York so that their children could get the best exposure to and instruction in classical music.
They will have six children at Juilliard school by next year.
According to mom Amber, she didn’t feel like she had a real direction as a teenager and thought learning classical music would be a better way for her children to spend their time rather than watching (as I would characterize it) the dangerous propaganda and children’s television/cable programming garbage of today.
Dad Marc has said that he didn’t want factors like a career getting in the way of them having families. He thinks our current individual-first, success-obsessed culture is a big problem in the world today. “We all have one appointment, which is death. You have to think: what are you leaving behind? A pile of money? A software program you wrote?”
Such amazing talent from one family. Enjoy the music.
