WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – According to the Department of Natural Resources, several counties in north-central Wisconsin have reached high fire hazard levels.
Portage, Wood, and Adams counties are among those being designated as “very high” danger, while Marathon County is described as being at “high” risk currently.
Because grass fires can spread quickly, officials are urging people to be especially cautious around anything that could start an outside fire.
Depending on where you live, you may or may not need a permit to burn something on your property, but the DNR advises caution while approaching burn piles and campfire sites.
If you do intend to have an outside fire where it is legal, make sure you have access to water so you can easily put it out.
According to the DNR, it has responded to over 30 wildfires in the last week.
