WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Police Department has closed two parks and several recreation areas along the Wisconsin River in preparation for flooding later this week.
Impacted areas include the areas under the Scott Street bridge on both sides of the river, Barker-Stewart Island Park, and the Isle of Ferns Park. All locations are closed to the public immediately, and both parks will remain closed until water levels go down.
Additionally, the city’s police department has ordered all unhoused or homeless individuals to vacate several areas along the river for their own safety. City leaders are working to arrange space at the Catholic Charities warming house and Salvation Army for those who need a place to stay. Arrangements will also be made for the storage of personal items.
The decisions were made in conjunction with the county’s emergency management team and WPS, which operates a dam along the river in Wausau.
