WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man accused of shooting another man in the parking lot of a Wisconsin Rapids hotel will have his trial delayed indefinitely.
Christopher Stevens was scheduled for a two-day trial beginning Wednesday for one count of attempted homicide, but court records show that’s been wiped off.
Stevens is accused of shooting another man during an argument back in 2022. He claims the shooting was in self-defense, saying that the other man hit him first.
Officers found the victim face-down in the parking lot, bleeding from his head. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment and did survive his injuries.
Court records show Stevens waived his right to a speedy trial during an appearance on Wednesday. A judge also modified his bond to $75,000 with conditions including no contact with the victims or their residence.
His bond had been set at $250,000.
A status conference has been scheduled for June 30th. Stevens, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, is being tried as an adult.
If found guilty he would face a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
