WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Officers with the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies conducted additional searches for 47-year-old Tara Sullivan on Thursday, and more are expected going into the weekend.
Public Information Officer Sarah Severson says for now they want to limit those search efforts to law enforcement, saying they aren’t ready to flood the area with volunteers just yet. “Especially along Highway 29. [That] proximity to a highly-traveled road [brings] many safety concerns. there is also private property along that road. At this time, searches are only being conducted by law enforcement.”
Additionally, having too many people in the search area can confuse search dogs and officers using drones or other aerial technology.
“We know that Tara has some connections in the Fox Valley area and it’s possible she has left both Marathon and Shawano counties,” added Severson. “We are considering all options at this point.”
“If you or anyone you know [happens to] know her well or has had contact with her in the past two weeks- please call the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office. We are interested in anyone who has had contact with her or knows her as we continue to gather information.”
Severson says the best way to help the search is to share Sullivan’s image with your friends and neighbors and to reach out to law enforcement if you think you know something.

Sullivan was reported missing on Wednesday after someone found her cell phone in the Town of Ringle earlier this week. Officers went to her home to return it but found she wasn’t home. Officers then observed some “suspicious circumstances” which led them to believe she had disappeared. They immediately issued an attempt to locate her with other police departments in the area.
Her abandoned vehicle was later found along Highway 29 in Shawano County, which is the area officers have been focusing their search so far.
Should a large-scale search be necessary, the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office will share details of when and where through its social media channels and local media. Anyone with information on Sullivan’s disappearance is asked to call the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office at 715-261-1200, option 5. If you see her or know where she is you’re asked to call 911 immediately.
