WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – According to a letter received by the Daily Caller News Foundation, Republican Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson is requesting information from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) regarding an alleged fraudulent fundraising scheme for Democratic political campaigns.
The letter was written on behalf of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, which has the responsibility of monitoring the performance of government agencies.
Johnson’s investigation was prompted by recent disclosures from O’Keefe Media Group (OMG), which claimed a money-laundering scheme is allegedly taking place via ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising group, into political campaigns. Following a number of prior requests to the FEC that were not complied with, the senator’s letter to the FEC is requesting explanation on OMG’s findings, which describe donations made to political campaigns without donors’ knowledge.
“I am disappointed that the FEC is refusing to provide transparency about its awareness of potential misconduct regarding political donations,” Johnson said in the letter. “It is important for the FEC to be forthcoming with Congress and the public in order to maintain confidence in the FEC’s abilities to address potential wrongdoing. With this in mind, I request the FEC provide a full explanation related to the allegations contained in the March 28, 2023 video.”
According to its website, ActBlue has raised nearly $12 billion for Democratic political campaigns, left-leaning groups, and other NGOs since 2004.
The letter claims the FEC complied at first with Johnson’s staff request for a briefing on the results of OMG, but withdrew after a time frame was established. Johnson’s staff asked for a “status update” on the letter and was informed that it was still being prepared; the FEC had previously volunteered to send him a letter outlining their reasons for canceling the briefing but never did so.
The FEC declined to provide the Daily Caller with comment on the matter.
