GRAND RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — One person is dead following a shooting incident in Grand Rapids on Friday.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, an officer made contact with someone who was walking on the street near 32nd Street S and Airport Avenue. During the incident, the person pulled a handgun.
The officer then fired their weapon and struck the person. Officers then rendered first aid, but the victim died at the scene.
The officer who fired the shot has been placed on paid leave as part of the investigation, which is standard procedure for such incidents. They were not injured in the incident. All police departments involved in the case are cooperating with the investigation, according to the DOJ.
After the investigation, the DOJ will turn its findings over to the Wood County District Attorney, who will have the final say on potential charges related to the case.
Names of those involved have not been released. Officers did recover the victim’s firearm.
