GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The long-awaited Rodgers trade has happened.
Multiple sources, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter, report that the Packers have sent Aaron Rodgers to the Jets along with the 15th and 170th overall pick in this year’s draft.
In exchange, the Jets will send the Packers the 13th, 42nd, and 207th overall picks in the 2023 draft, as well as a second round pick that may become a first round pick in 2024 if Rodgers plays more than 65% of the snaps in 2023.
The Jets will pick up Rodgers already guaranteed option bonus of $58.3 million, which means that it more than likely will be converted to a roster bonus due to the Jets cap situation. Rodgers will count $40.3 million on the Packers salary cap in 2023 which will be dead cap.
Rodgers will be officially off the Packers’ books in 2024, allowing the team to extend guys like Rashan Gary and pick up Jordan Love’s fifth-year option, which is due next week.
GM Brian Gutekunst spoke to media yesterday saying, “He’ll always be a Packer and he’ll be one of the best that have ever done it around here. I have a lot of respect how he went about it and he’ll be missed. There’s no doubt about it. Players like that don’t come around very often.”
Although Hall of Fame quarterback and Jets franchise icon Joe Namath gave Rodgers permission to wear No. 12, a source told Schefter that the new Jets quarterback is expected to wear No. 8 – the number he wore in college at Cal.
After 18 years in Green Bay, Rodgers finishes his Packer career as the franchise’s all-time passing touchdown leader and second in passing yards, trailing only Brett Farve.
