WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Layoffs are coming to 3M the company announced on Tuesday as part of another big restructuring plan as the industrial industry braces for a probable recession and a drop in product demand.
The manufacturer of well-known consumer products like Post-It Notes and Scotch Tape says they will be laying off at least 6,000 workers worldwide. These layoffs are in addition to the 2,500 manufacturing jobs terminated by 3M in January. 3M also went through large layoff periods back in 2019 and 2020.
Earlier this year 3M employees went on strike as they were looking for a new labor contract from the company.

Due to the layoffs, the company anticipates saving up to $900 million annually before taxes. The company says the modifications are “intended to make 3M stronger, leaner, and more focused” by streamlining its supply chain and removing what they view as unnecessary positions.
At this moment, 3M has not said what this means for employees in northcentral Wisconsin and what the future of the plant here in Wausau will look like long term.
