GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – As usual, the NFL draft has become one of the busiest days of the year for league insiders and press outlets covering the teams to determine what the teams intend to do with their draft picks.
According to a recent SB Nation poll, 53% of Packer fans would like the team to stay with the 13th overall pick, while 42% believe trading down would be the best choice. Only 5% of respondents wanted the Packers to move up from 13 to get the best player possible.
Fans were also surveyed on who they wanted Green Bay to draft during tonight’s first round, with Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright taking 32% of the vote and Ohio State wide receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigba finishing in a close second with 30% of the vote. Other notable players who received votes included Clemson pass rusher Myles Murphy and Iowa pass rusher Lukas Van Ness.
The Green Bay Packers have reportedly talked about trading back in the draft, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
“Throw the Packers into the pile of teams that would consider moving back tomorrow night, after the Aaron Rodgers trade bumped them up a couple of spots to No. 13. I’ve heard Green Bay linked to both of the top tight ends in the class— Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer and Utah’s Dalton Kincade—and 13 would probably be a tad high for either of them,” Breer said late Wednesday night.
The Packers hosted both Michael Mayer and Dalton Kincaid for Top 30 official visits and met with both of them during the scouting combine.
With only 48 career receptions between them, Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis are at the top of the team’s depth chart after Robert Tonyan signed with Chicago, and Mercedes Lewis still being an unrestricted free agent.
Even though it has been 21 years since the Packers last drafted a wide receiver in the first round, it has been even longer since the Packers last drafted a tight end in the first round of the NFL Draft, with the most recent being Bubba Franks with the 14th overall pick back in 2000.
