GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Packers filled a major void in their defense last night when they selected one of the draft’s most athletic pass rushers in Iowa’s Lukas Van Ness.
Tonight, many expect the Packers to change gears and focus on getting Jordan Love some weapons, as four of the top five tight ends are still on the board, along with many of the wide receivers the Packers scouted.
The Packers’ history of selecting star receivers on Day 2 is well established. Ted Thompson drafted Jordy Nelson in the second round before Aaron Rodgers’ debut season as a starter in 2008. Davante Adams was a No. 53 pick in 2014, and Christian Watson was drafted 34th overall after an aggressive trade-up last year.
Gutekunst has the opportunity to hit another home run tonight with receivers such as Jonathan Mingo, Jalin Hyatt, Rashee Rice, A.T. Perry, Josh Downs, and Nathaniel Dell all being viable options for the Packers.
Tight ends like Michael Mayer, Luke Musgrave, Darnell Washington, Sam LaPorta, and Tucker Kraft are still available. Many of these players may come off the board early in the second round, but the Packers are in a position to either move up to select one of these players or wait and hope at least one falls to 42.
Tonight will be a huge success for the Packers if they can leave Day 2 with one of the best tight ends still available, a receiver who fits their updated offensive plan, and an offensive lineman to help protect Jordan Love long-term.
