WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A one-day jury trial has been scheduled for a former Central Wisconsin resident who faces felony charges for abusing a family pet.
Andrew Gehr is accused of physically abusing a cat then leaving it in an outdoor shed and pretending to help others search for the cat for several days.
Gehr faces two counts including a felony for mistreatment of animals- causing death and a misdemeanor count of intentional mistreatment of animals. The cat had to be put down due to its condition.
Judge Gregory Strasser scheduled that trial for August 22nd. A final pre-trial conference will be held on July 24th.
He has admitted to “punching” the cat after he was faced with evidence including blood and urine found on the cat’s bedding. He was initially charged with just misdemeanor counts in connection with the case, but one charge was increased after his girlfriend’s family petitioned the court and protested during some of the early hearings in the case.
Court records show that the 32-year-old recently moved to Mankato, Minnesota.
