STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A SPASH Alum and former professional basketball player both in the WNBA and in Europe has been named the new girl’s basketball coach for the Panthers.
Janel McCarville, a 2001 SPASH graduate and former four-year starter at the University of Minnesota will take over the position after spending the last year on the school’s JV coaching staff. Athletic Director David Hauser says he feels fortunate to bring a high-profile alum back to lead the program.
Her time in the SPASH program and her familiarity with SPASH and Stevens Point community make this addition to our coaching staff and program very special,” said Hauser in a press release. “Coach McCarville’s experiences as both a player and a coach will be invaluable to our student-athletes. In addition, she brings a passion for the sport and a desire to continue to build and maintain the expectations not only of this program but the overall athletic program. We are thrilled that he is willing to share that with our student-athletes.”
McCarville ended her career at the U of M ranked in the top five of nearly every major statistical category. She was the #1 overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft by the now-folded Charlotte Sting. She also played for the Minnesota Lynx, where she won a pair of WNBA titles, before taking her career to Europe.
She spent the past few seasons as a player-coach in Sweden before returning to Central Wisconsin last October.
