WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A longtime member of the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School staff is retiring after it was discovered that he was involved in a hit-and-run crash back in February.
WAOW TV reports that Dan Witter’s resignation was accepted by the Board of Education this week, a move confirmed by Superintendent Craig Boren in an email statement:
“The Board of Education approved Dan Witter’s retirement effective at the end of this school year. Lincoln High School and our Human Resources Department have already begun the processes to fill his teaching position and coaching position for next school year.”
The accident in question happened on February 8th in the town of Grand Rapids. Witter admitted he had been drinking the night of the incident when he hit a vehicle near 80th Street and Washington. He said he “freaked out” after hitting another vehicle and drove off, but did call the Sheriff’s office the next day to confess.
Witter has been the boy’s basketball coach for the Red Raiders since 1999 and was a 2023 inductee into the Wisconsin Basketball Coache’s Hall of Fame. His coaching career spans more than 40 years.
