DENVER, CO (WSAU) — The Milwaukee Brewers are glad to be leaving the Centennial State.
A first-inning two-run homer from Christian Yelich was not nearly enough as Milwaukee’s bullpen imploded, allowing nine runs in the final two innings of a 9-6 loss on Thursday.
Yelich, who went 3-5 on the day, gave Milwaukee an early 2-0 lead. Rowdy Tellez and Tyrone Taylor each added solo home runs to make it a 4-0 edge through six.
But that’s when Colorado would turn things around, leading to a Harold Castro grounder which brought home two runs and put the Rockies on top 6-4 in the 8th. Charlie Blackmon added another two-run single before the inning ended as well.
Yelich and Jesse Winker recorded RBI base hits in the top of the 9th, but the rally ended there.
Brian Anderson went 3-4 with a run scored in the game. Winker and Victor Caratini each added two hits.
Starting pitcher Wade Miley went six innings and allowed just six hits but did give up three runs in the 7th. Joel Payamps was able to finish the inning but not before allowing a 4th run to come home. He was charged with a blown save.
Peter Strzelecki (2-2) took the loss in relief after allowing five earned runs on three hits. He started the 8th inning and recorded just one out. Tyson Miller was called in to finish the frame.
Milwaukee falls to 18-13 on the season and has now lost four straight games going back to Sunday’s affair with the Angels. They’ll travel to San Francisco to begin a three-game set with the Giants on Friday. Pregame coverage on WSAU begins at 8:40 PM.
