BROWNSVILLE, TX (WSAU) – As Americans continue to watch migrants from all over the world arrive at the U.S. southern border in anticipation of the end of Title 42, many wonder what the federal government’s plan is to get the situation under control.
NBC News is reporting that the Biden administration is reportedly drafting a letter that will instruct Customs and Border Protection to begin releasing immigrants into the country without court dates and no ability to track them after more than 11,000 migrants were apprehended trying to cross the southern border on Tuesday, according to three sources familiar with the plans.
The number of border arrests of 11,000 in a single day is a record and exceeds the projection of 10,000 per day made by Department of Homeland Security officials regarding what would occur when Covid restrictions are lifted on Thursday.
On condition of anonymity because the person wasn’t authorized to speak to the media, a DHS official told NBC News, “We’re already breaking and we haven’t even hit the starting line.”
According to NBC News’s sources acquainted with the figures, there are already more than 27,000 migrants being processed by Customs and Border Protection, significantly more than the roughly 18,500 people that the facilities are designed to house.
DHS claims the decision to release migrants who are now housed in overcrowded facilities was made to relieve congestion there before a larger influx is anticipated when Title 42 is indeed lifted.
Fox News’s Bill Melugin is at the border reporting on the crisis and took video of Texas National Guard soldiers arriving in riot gear to begin preparations to repel the crossings.
