WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Renovations to 17th Avenue between Stewart Avenue and Elm Street are scheduled to start tomorrow May 11th, 2023.
The Wausau City Council unanimously decided to remodel the road in October and followed the engineer’s advice to make no changes, thus the redesign would have a mountable median and two lanes of traffic in each direction. According to engineer TJ Niksich, the design is not only the most cost-effective choice, but it also has the optimum traffic flow.

“The raised median would be the best option to limit the number of left-turn conflicts,” said Niksich. “We’ve analyzed the traffic data and the crash data and didn’t see any reason to change. There were very few traffic accidents and the ones that did occur would not have changed with a raised median.”
As the project develops, 17th Avenue will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction and this project is expected to last until September 30th, 2023.
