WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Dog lovers in Wisconsin Rapids are anxiously awaiting the grand opening of the city’s new dog park.
Mayor Shane Blaser says fencing at the site was recently installed and the Parks department just seeded the grass, so now it’s a matter of waiting for a good base to be established before they open the site up for dogs and their owners. “We’re figuring mid to late-summer,” said Mayor Blaser. “We [want to] wait until we can get some mowings in on it to make sure it’s well-established. We don’t want to have a big mud pit.”
He says there’s also some tree pruning and maintenance that needs to happen in the area as well before they let it go to the dogs this summer.
As far as features and amenities for the park, Blaser says they’ll be pretty basic to start but they’re hoping that a user group can come forward to plan and fundraise for them. “We’ll have some fire hydrants for the dogs but as for agility equipment and other extras- those haven’t been discussed yet.”
Other things he would like to see in the park include picnic tables or shelters. “I think there’s a lot of ideas outside of what the city has taken responsibility for,” he added.
The dog park has been one of Mayor Blaer’s pet projects over his first three years in office.
