MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The spring 2023 Drug Take Back saw Wisconsin gather the most prescription drugs nationwide, according to a statement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
Since this past fall, Wisconsin has gathered 55,472 lbs. of unneeded medications.
Since Wisconsin’s Drug Take Back program was launched in 2010 under the direction of the US DEA, a total of 1,148,917 lbs. of unwanted medications have been collected. Only California and Texas, with 1,344,373 and 1,338,115 pounds of medications collected each since 2010, have gathered more since 2010 than Wisconsin. During Drug Take Back activities, 17,300,454 lbs. of extra medication have been collected nationwide.
Although the official Drug Take Back Day only occurs twice a year, there are 490 permanent drug disposal boxes spread across the state at law enforcement offices, medical facilities, pharmacies, and clinics where you can return medicines at any time of the year.
