MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — The business park in Marshfield city has been expanded and the state is currently collaborating with them to acquire the highly sought-after shovel-ready designation for the area.
Administrator Steve Barg says that would mean more exposure for the city as they look to bring a new business or company into town and new jobs for residents. “The benefit is your name goes on this list that developers and site selectors will see. [When you’re on that list] they know they can come here, or at least explore us, because we’re ready to go.”
Barg says factors that will go into being named shovel-ready not only include having utilities and street infrastructure in place. Developers want to see things like soil test results and details of any nearby wetlands that may need to be considered before they commit. Access to rail and fiber optic technology also plays a factor.
“Years ago I thought rail would fade out. But it hasn’t. Rail is still a big thing with a lot of our industrial customers. [They ask] if it’s available, and if it’s not can it be extended in a short time with a spur to help a company get going?” said Barg.
Barg suggests having multiple companies in the area, preferably light industrial or technology businesses but is open to suggestions.
“If they have family-supporting jobs and will be able to give us some tax dollars to help us improve the park and the city as a whole we’d love to talk to them. Really all kids of businesses would be welcome,” added Barg.
The city is currently in talks with at least one company; however, it may take a few months before any additional information can be disclosed to the public.
