RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – Wildfire smoke from Canada has caused air quality in the Northwoods to drop to the moderate and unhealthy for sensitive groups categories in recent weeks.
People with underlying conditions like asthma or COPD are more likely to be affected by low air quality.
Even people without those conditions can experience symptoms like eye irritation, scratchy throat, or a runny nose.
Alexis Rose is an Aspirus Nurse Practitioner. “It really is hard to tell the difference… high pollen as well.”
Over-the-counter allergy medications can help with symptoms from both wildfire smoke and allergies.
People with those underlying conditions may need to use their inhaler or other medication. “If they’re at all concerned… we can always help with anything.”
Avoiding time outdoors when the air quality drops can help prevent symptoms.
