MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The Wisconsin Legislature is anticipated to pass legislation today that will safeguard the public’s access to gas-powered cars, lawnmowers, and other utilities.
Democrats voted unanimously against the changes that were passed by the Republican-controlled Assembly in April, and the Senate is set to give final approval on Wednesday. Gov. Tony Evers will have the option of signing the legislation into law or vetoing them. He stated earlier this year that he didn’t think a ban on gas engines is necessary for Wisconsinites to want to switch over to electric vehicles.
The bills aim to ban policies that are comparable to legislation passed in California last year that mandates that by 2035, all new automobiles, trucks, and SUVs sold in the state must operate on electricity. There would also be a ban on local governments from restricting utility services such as natural gas, which is anticipated to be voted on by the Senate on Wednesday.
Democrats deny that they intend to seek any kind of ban on gas engines in Wisconsin and have accused the bill’s authors of being dishonest.
Republicans along with the state chamber of commerce and energy firms, have stated that it is necessary to stop Wisconsin from enacting any kind of ban similar to those being debated in other states. Most notably, the state of New York will outlaw the use of natural gas stoves and furnaces in all new structures in 2026.
