STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) – A new law to support veterans is being introduced by U.S. Representative Derrick Van Orden.
The “National Warrior Call Day” would be a new designation under the proposed legislation, and it would fall on November 12 the day after Veterans Day.
The purpose of the day is to encourage veterans and active military personnel to check in on one another to make sure they are doing well.
“There’s a rash of veteran suicide in this country, and oftentimes one of the first indicators of suicidal ideation is that you isolate yourself,” Van Orden said. “This is a way to kind of breakthrough that isolation and just let people know that you’re thinking about them, and that could be the one thing that changes the downward spiral that people, unfortunately, oftentimes find themselves in.”
The Committee on Armed Services has been assigned to consider the bill, which was introduced on Wednesday.
