WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – On Thursday of last week, 3M struck a $10.3 billion settlement with several public water systems in the United States to address water pollution claims related to “forever chemicals,” including the city of Wausau.
According to Reuters, the settlement would give cities, towns, and other public water systems money to test for and fix PFAS contamination over 13 years.
Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg released a statement about the settlement saying, “The City of Wausau took a proactive step to protect its ratepayers and taxpayers and filed a timely complaint in Federal Court against multiple defendants, including 3M, seeking to hold certain parties responsible for the contamination found in the City of Wausau drinking water wells. ”
“The City remains deeply committed to protecting its citizens and to holding polluters accountable for contaminating the City’s drinking water. Additional investigations continue as to other potentially responsible parties liable for contaminating the City’s water system,” Rosenberg continued.
3M faced thousands of lawsuits over PFAS contamination, and stated that the funding will support remediation at public water systems that detect PFAS “at any level.”
