STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza spoke with reporters this morning to welcome guests for the 2023 USGA Men’s Senior Open golf tournament.
“You know how we always talk about how there is always something going on in Stevens Point? This week is the exception. There’s really nothing to see here,” said Mayor Wiza, with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek.
The city has been working with the USGA for nearly 18 months now since the tournament was first awarded in February 2021. That process has included countless meetings to go over details big and small from traffic flow to emergency response plans and housing for the thousands of spectators.

Wiza says the tournament is a big opportunity to expose the city to thousands of golf and sports enthusiasts who may not have otherwise thought to pay a visit. He hopes that during their stay they will venture out to enjoy everything the city has to offer. “If there is an interest you have, it’s very likely that Stevens Point has something that can tie into that interest. We have a wonderful riverfront with gorgeous sunsets. We have an amazing parks system, and wonderful shopping districts both downtown and throughout the city. We have wonderful dining establishments and breweries and distilleries offering tours.
“Don’t limit yourself to just SentryWorld, get out and explore,” added Wiza.
He also noted that many establishments will have specials for USGA attendees.
The event also runs into the city’s annual Riverfront Rendezvous celebration in Pfiffner Pioneer Park and some youth baseball tournaments.

Wiza was also asked about potential contingency plans related to air quality in the region. “Those thresholds are determined by the USGA just like heat index or a storm. [They’ll] make those calls if and when those thresholds are met.”
He adds that those who want to take in the event without having to be outside will have some options available. Organizers have premium seating areas, but those do come at a higher cost. He says many local establishments will also be tuned in to NBC Universal’s coverage through The Golf Channel and other outlets.
