Milwaukee, WI (WSAU)- After having the opportunity to tie for first place in the National League Central Division, the Milwaukee Brewers lost their golden chance, losing to the Cincinnati Reds, 8-5 last night.
From the get-go, the Brewers looked sharp coming into game two of the series. At the bottom of the 3rd, Christian Yelich had doubled home a run to take a 2-1 lead before Willy Adames smashed his second home run of the game, causing a 4-1 gap in the game.
The momentum then shifted and the Reds tagged Brewer Colin Rea for 5 runs, taking back the lead in the 7th. For the Reds though, history was about to be made when Elly De La Cruz became the second MLB player to steal 3 bases in a single plate appearance. De La Cruz lined a slider over the plate in an 0-2 count, from a go-ahead single with 2 outs at the top of the 7th, as he immediately stole 2nd base. On the Brewers’ reliever, Elvis Perguero’s 2nd pitch to batter Jake Fraley, Dela Cruz stole third.
Catcher William Contreras didn’t think twice about throwing to 3rd and tossed the ball back to Pegruro. De La Cruz took the opportunity as he sprinted and dove across home plate, head first.
Milwaukee was not able to regain momentum from that moment on, as the Reds held the Brewers scoreless for 5 innings.
Abner Uribe had his first MLB debut in the 8th inning and struck out 2 batters. In the 9th, as he faced the Reds’ 2nd baseman, he called for a balk that brought Counsell out of the dugout. He had words with the ump at home plate and was ejected from the game. 3rd baseman Brian Anderson also was ejected from the game due to the balk call.
Milwaukee has won 4 of the 6 meetings between the NL Central rivals this season, and both teams will reconvene today with pregame coverage that starts at 12:35 on WSAU.
