It is a special election day in Rib Mountain.
The 5,068 registered voters in the town will head to the Municipal Center to decide if they will become a village, a move that would lock the town’s borders and prevent any land from being acquired by neighboring communities such as Wausau or Rothschild.
According to the Town Clerk, the ballot offers a straightforward “yes” or “no” question- those in favor of the move should vote yes, and those against should vote no.
Just like any other election, the polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Voters need to present a photo ID before receiving their ballot. Election officials expect that the results should be tabulated shortly after 8:00.
The State Department of Administration would need to certify the results. If the election passes the change will take effect immediately, and another election would need to be held this fall to select the Village President and Trustees.
Talk of incorporating Rib Mountain into a Village isn’t new, but this is the first time that the process has gotten this deep. Tuesday’s vote marks the last major hurdle in the process, which picked up steam in 2022 when the Town submitted the required paperwork to the DOA with help from a consultant. Town leaders and legal raps held a hearing with the DOA and the community earlier this year. Approval for the plan was given in early May.
