Officials with the Central Wisconsin Airport have a big announcement for Wednesday morning.
Airport Director Brian Grefe has called a 10 AM news conference to announce a new airline will be docking the facility with new non-stop destinations. It’s not clear what airline will be joining Delta and American at the Mosinee facility, but we do know that they have been working for some time to bring in a vacation destination.
Back in March 2022 Grefe went to the Marathon County Board of Supervisors looking for approval of contingency dollars to help offset the start-up costs for a new airline. During that meeting he specifically Minnesota-based Sun Country Airlines which operates flights to vacation destinations in the United States, Central America, and the Caribbean. During that meeting, Grefe said that Sun Country operates from smaller and mid-size airports including St. Cloud, Minnesota and Eau Claire.
This would be the first major addition for the airport since United Airlines announced they were dropping CWA from their route schedule completely back in November 2021. The facility also lost direct flights to Detroit, Michigan when Delta reworked its schedule in November 2022.
The airport did get a bit of good news last month when American Airlines added a 3rd daily flight to Chicago starting on July 5th.
