WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The movie event of the year has finally arrived, and movie critics from all around the world are weighing in on Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”.
Oppenheimer has earned a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 100 critic reviews and Barbie is opening with a 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 144 critic reviews.
AV Club’s Matthew Jackson left the Oppenheimer premier with high praise for director Christopher Nolan saying, “It’s Christopher Nolan’s best film so far, a step up to a new level for one of our finest filmmakers, and a movie that burns itself into your brain.”
Matt Zoller Seitz from RogerEbert.com also gave Oppenheimer high marks saying, “As a physical experience, “Oppenheimer” is something else entirely—it’s hard to say exactly what, and that’s what’s so fascinating about it.”
Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has received mixed reviews so far leaving questions about how audiences will view the film. Chauncey K. Robinson of the People’s World reviewed the film saying, “For the most part, Barbie achieves great comedy with sharp commentary. It doesn’t completely stick every landing, but the fun ride of the film is adventurous enough that most viewers won’t mind some of the minor shortcomings.”
Popular Christian movie review site Movieguide viewed the film last week and issued some stern warnings to parents who may take their daughters or young children to “Barbie” saying the movie, “forgets its core audience of families and children while catering to nostalgic adults and pushing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender character stories.”
The films are expected to earn a combined $159 million this weekend domestically alone and AMC reports that over 20,000 moviegoers have double-booked tickets to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same night.
Both films open tomorrow at Marcus Theaters in Rothschild, with Oppenheimer having four showings, the first of which starts at 5 PM, and Barbie having a whopping seven showings, with the first starting at 3 PM.
