ROCKFORD, IL (WSAU) – Wausau was able to pick up a 7-4 win to open the set Thursday night in its first visit to Rivets Stadium since 2021.
Utilizing two-run innings in the first, third, and seventh was what put Wausau (9-8/29-23) on top.
With the game tied up at two a piece in the third, Jake Baker (Kansas) drove in the two runs of that inning with a two-RBI single.
Brent Widder (Evansville) drove in the one run in the fourth with a double off the wall in center field. Rockford (11-8/31-22) cut the lead to one in the sixth, but the aforementioned two in the seventh put the game out of reach.
Widder had a multi-hit game, going 2/4 with an RBI double and a walk. Colin Brueggemann (Oklahoma State) hit his 12th double of the season to bring home a run in the 6th. Christian Mitchelle (Cincinnati) made his first appearance on the mound this summer in the ninth with two outs and got the one out he was asked to get – forcing a lineout.
Wausau will go for the series sweep Friday, July 21 with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
