Wausau Police Chief Ben Bliven will go before the City’s Finance Committee to request a new 10-year contract with Axon for equipment and services including body and in-vehicle cameras, tasers, and interview room recording suites for his department.
According to a memo included with Tuesday’s agenda packet the Department’s current contract is up soon, and the costs associated with all of that equipment has gone up considerably. Meaning the department would like a longer deal to stabilize the price of that equipment over the next decade.
That ten-year contract would cost about $235,708 per year, which was 44% less than a competing bid from Utility Associates, INC.
Bliven will also ask the committee to consider hiring extra police officers beyond their current maximum to account for pending retirements and resignations. Bliven says they have two retirements pending in early January, plus his own resignation on September 1st. According to Bliven, this move would allow potential officers to begin the 18-week police academy and five-month field training process sooner.
