WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Marathon County Park Commissioners and Environmental Resources Committee members are set to consider hiring JGL Architects to conduct a concept and feasibility study for a new county-run ice arena to replace the current rink in Marathon Park.
According to JGL’s estimate, they would conduct user-group studies and gather feedback, then prepare site plans and renderings for a new facility at $32,500. Should the county move forward with the plans and retain JGL to provide professional services through the planning and construction process, they would credit the county $20,000 off their first invoice.
The cost of the study would be shared among all user groups. The county parks department has committed $10,500 to the project, Marathon County Youth Hockey plans to chip in $5,000, and the Wausau Board of Education will consider giving another $5,000 to the project.
The County Board will be asked to consider adding $12,000 to the study during an upcoming meeting, possibly from the county’s allotment of ARPA funds.
It’s unclear where the new arena would go, but leaders note that it would not be within Marathon Park. Moving the arena is currently part of the Park’s master plan which was approved in February.
You can see more about the proposal from JGL in Tuesday’s agenda packet. Both groups will be meeting tomorrow, with Parks Commissioners gathering at 10 AM and the ERC at 3 PM.
The Marathon County Ice Arena currently hosts youth games and practices at all levels including Wausau East/Merrill and West High School games and the Wausau Cyclones junior team.
