CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – You’ve probably heard about the movie Sound of Freedom. It’s about one man’s effort to find and rescue children from sex trafficking.
The movie contends that right now in the United States there are more people trapped in sexual slavery than there were slaves before the Civil War. I don’t know. I think it’s difficult, maybe impossible, to get accurate sex trafficking statistics. We do know that the number is disturbingly large.
This says something about us. There are tens of thousands of children being forced into prostitution – why? – because of supply and demand. If there were no customers, this business would dry up immediately. There’d be no money in it. For every abducted child, there’s a willing adult who wants sexual favors from them.
How did we get to this low place? I think it’s about abortion. We are a society that’s still openly debating whether it’s immoral to snuff out the life of an unborn baby. And if you can do that, you can sink to all other levels of depravity. Look at the amount of violence were tolerate in our entertainment. Look at how overt sexuality has permeated… everything. “Your pregnancy is an inconvenience… here, take this pill; it’ll be gone in the morning.” It isn’t a very far leap in that type of society that children might be used for the sexual gratification of adults.
I think of myself as a moral person. I have a strong sense of right and wrong. I try to do the right thing. But I should not be so smug. The waters that I swim in throughout my life are polluted with immorality; how can I not get wet?
