WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – Former President Donald Trump stated in an interview this week that he will not sign a “Beat Biden” pledge to support the GOP nominee if he were to lose the primary.
“I have a problem with the debate for another reason: I wouldn’t sign the pledge,” Trump said in an interview on Newsmax this week. “Why would I sign a pledge? There are people on there that I wouldn’t have.”
“I wouldn’t have certain people as, you know, somebody that I endorse,” he added. “So they want you to sign a pledge.”
Trump stated that there are four GOP candidates that he would never support but did not clarify which candidates he was speaking about.
Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told CNN’s Chris Wallace that everyone has to sign the pledge saying, “Everybody has to sign the beat Biden pledge, everybody, it’s across the board, the rules aren’t changing, we’ve been very vocal with them.”
This disagreement has caused some GOP voters to be concerned that if Trump were to lose the primary and not sign the pledge, that would guarantee President Biden a 2024 victory.
According to FiveThirtyEight, former President Trump currently has the largest advantage over Ron DeSantis ever, with a 39-point lead. Cygnal’s latest polling also shows Trump ahead of Ron DeSantis by 43 points, which further demonstrates that despite the former President’s legal issues, his base has not shifted much since May.
