WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — It will likely be two weeks before the Wausau City Council can meet in closed session to discuss an amended development agreement with T Wall Enterprises for the Foundry on 3rd.
Mayor Katie Rosenberg had initially planned for the discussion to take place early this week, but after polling the Alders it became clear that wouldn’t be an option. “Everyone who has responded to our poll has said ‘I can’t make this time, but I want to make this meeting. Please make sure I can make this meeting.’ So we are trying to make sure we are really careful with how we are scheduling it.”
The item was scheduled to be approved as part of the Tuesday, August 8th City Council meeting. Rosenberg initially pulled the item from the agenda, but it was brought back at the request of Alder Doug Diny. The council then voted to table the matter.
Rosenberg said she received feedback from several Alders who didn’t want to simply rubber stamp the change. Instead, they requested a closed session so they could ask questions and get advice from the city’s legal team. That couldn’t be arranged on short notice, so the item was delayed to a future date.
Rosenberg wouldn’t elaborate on what those questions were, only saying that the Council wants to keep the city’s best interest in mind, especially given that taxpayer money will be used for the project. “People are concerned about what [a delay] means because the city has some work to do too. You know, we’re building and updating infrastructure, we’re doing a variety of things.”
She adds that she’s had direct conversations with the developer, and has no reason to believe that T Wall won’t deliver a finished product.
The proposed Foundry on 3rd includes a multi-story apartment complex and first-floor dining and retail space. Parking and an outdoor green space are also part of the plans.
As of Friday, no special meeting was scheduled.
