WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – One of President Vladimir Putin’s biggest critics and allies is believed to have died on Wednesday following a private plane crash.
According to a story from The Financial Times, the Russian authorities said that the crash claimed the life of Yevgeny Prigozhin as well as the lives of nine others on the aircraft, including the pilot and flight attendants.
Sources close to the matter say that early indications show that the plane was shot down by Russian air defense. However, an investigation has been opened into the matter and no cause has been confirmed at this time.
Back in June, forces loyal to Prigozhin along with the Wagner Group marched toward Moscow before turning back after several days.
According to the Kremlin, Prigozhin allegedly reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin in which he was spared prosecution for the rebellion and released back to Belarus. He was last seen in Africa earlier this week in a video where he stated that Wagner troops would be deployed to the continent.
